As an artist, I most enjoy working in acrylic paint for its versatility; the ability to be both ethereal and bold is most useful in amplifying the juxtapose between light and matter in our environments. This instinctual attraction to light is used to encourage viewers to be moved by each of my works. Lights evanescent qualities can be exaggerated to capture a moment or create emotion. I make use of the acrylic’s flexibility in creating slowly revealed elements and sensation within my work.

My goal is to initiate this expressive engagement with the viewer, encouraging them to see beyond the obvious, while inspiring them to pause, celebrate, treasure, respect, and appreciate the world around them.
Look for the hidden first responders in the painting. (More subtle in person)

These two paintings are a study of contrast and sameness. The same portrait done in two different styles also the contrast of color verses black and white. They are to be viewed together to ask the questions about the mood and effectiveness of each.

To me art is an unending journey to the unknown and that is what makes creating challenging and rewarding.

      Meet Sophie Burns

      • ARTIST STATEMENT

For me, art is exploration of life. With a pencil or a paintbrush, I can call attention to certain things or create something not possible in our world. Creativity’s potential is endless.

This piece is a surrealist representation of possibilities. The water is colored in a way that would not be found in real life. The girl in the center of the piece has her arms outstretched – maybe embracing the ocean breeze, maybe ready to fall. She might even lift off of the rock and fly away. The stilled moment of time prevents you from knowing or finding out exactly what happens.
